CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) is a
proprietary, simple, and low overhead protocol that is one of the
best methods of understanding your network topology.
CDP is a Layer 2 media and protocol independent protocol that runs
on all Cisco-manufactured equipment. The devices do not need to have
any network layer protocols configured in order to use CDP. This
protocol uses broadcasts to a MAC layer multicast to show directly
connected neighbors. Switches do not forward CDP broadcasts.
CDP multicasts are normally sent every 30 seconds and ARE NOT
forwarded by switches. To support forwarding CDP messages over an
interface, that interface must support SNAP headers.
