There are three main types of WAN links:
Leased Lines (point-to-point or dedicated line); a leased line
provides a single pre-established WAN communications path from the
customer premises through a service provider’s network for private
use. Leased lines eliminate issues that arise with a shared
connection, but they are costly. Leased lines are typically employed
over synchronous serial connections up to T3/E3 speeds with
guaranteed bandwidth availability.
Circuit Switched; a circuit switched is a WAN switching method in
which a dedicated circuit path must exist between sender and
receiver for the duration of the call. ISDN employs circuit
switching and sporadic WAN usage.
Packet Switched; packet switching is a WAN switching method in which
a network devices share a single point-to-point link to transport
information from a source to a destination across a carrier VC
(Virtual Circuit) network. Packet headers identify the destination,
and services are similar to those of leased lines, except that the
line is shared, and the cost of service is lower.
